I can't find it listed on a website anywhere, but the download area (http://savannah.nongnu.org/files/?group=avrdude) indicates a new tarball for version 5.10 as of 19-Jan-2010. Seems to work fine by just copying the 5.8 ebuild.
This probably invalidates bug #300312.
5.10 is working good for me, please bump ebuild in portage. nothing needs to be changed in the ebuild to update.
I would additionally like to report success with using the same ebuild as for avrdude-5.8 instead for avrdude-5.10. Please bump the version.
I too request that the maintainers bump avrdude in the portage tree. I can also confirm what Joe Sapp said, that avrdude-5.10 fixes bug #300312. That's the reason I upgraded my version.
Created attachment 238867 [details] New ebuild for avrdude-5.10. This is an ebuild for avrdude 5.10. It uses a patch I posted to the avrdude bugtracker (bug 30268) concerning a problem with debugWire programming with avrdude and the avr dragon. Since it doesn't seem like the developers will release a new version including it any time soon, i thought it might be a good idea to include the patch in the new ebuild.
Created attachment 238869 [details, diff] The patch which the new ebuild uses. This patch fixes a problem with debugWire programming.
Just to be clear. The bug I was talking about is on avrdude's bugtracker, not gentoo's bugzilla. It is bug 30268 which can be found at: https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/index.php?30268 I hope the new ebuild gets merged into the tree soon.

Any progress on that?
what is the URL for the patch in question ? or even better, if it was committed, what is the URL to the upstream repo with the change ?
A semi random user poked me about this bug today. Seeing that vapier commented on it also I'm guessing we all got IRC spammed.
