Description Steffen Hau 2010-01-26 16:23:49 UTC
emerge --depclean states the following:
Calculating dependencies... done!
 * Dependencies could not be completely resolved due to
 * the following required packages not being installed:
 *
 *   dev-texlive/texlive-latexextra pulled in by:
 *     dev-python/epydoc-3.0.1-r1
 *
 * Have you forgotten to run `emerge --update --newuse --deep @world` prior
 * to depclean? It may be necessary to manually uninstall packages that no longer
 * exist in the portage tree since it may not be possible to satisfy their
 * dependencies. Also, be aware of the --with-bdeps option that is documented
 * in `man emerge`.

emerge -puvDN @system @world gives:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 kB

Why does emerge not install the missing dependency?

Note: texlive-latexextra was uninstalled by a prior -uvDN @world run:
[uninstall    ] dev-texlive/texlive-latexextra-2008-r1  USE="doc -source"
[blocks b     ] <dev-texlive/texlive-latexextra-2009 ("<dev-texlive/texlive-latexextra-2009" is blocking dev-texlive/texlive-langgerman-2009)

I guess texlive-latexextra should have been updated as well (since it could be normally merged). Perhaps there's a bug somewhere in the emerge logic.

Reproducible: Always

Please, provide emerge --info. Also do you have app-text/ptex installed?
Comment 2 Steffen Hau 2010-01-27 17:42:21 UTC
app-text/ptex is not installed, otherwise it should not have complained about missing dependencies, right?

Sorry, here is emerge --info:

Comment 3 Steffen Hau 2010-01-29 12:54:24 UTC
I'm a bit confused because emerge -uvDN @installed would install the missing packages.

time emerge -puvDN @installed
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] dev-texlive/texlive-pictures-2009  USE="doc -source" 13,860 kB
[ebuild  N    ] dev-texlive/texlive-latexextra-2009  USE="doc -source" 184,103 kB

From time to time updating @world @system ignores some updates. E.g. dev-python/sphinx was updateable from 0.6.3 to 0.6.4 as well as some Perl modules. The @installed set lists them as expected.
Comment 4 Zac Medico gentoo-dev 2010-03-10 09:09:59 UTC
Did you try to update using --with-bdeps=y? Generally, it's not recommended to use @installed since that can prevent blockers from being solved automatically (there is a comment about this in /usr/share/portage/config/sets.conf).

Bug 266861 or bug 274454 might be related.
Comment 5 Steffen Hau 2010-03-10 10:12:56 UTC
Hi,

I googled a little bit and found the option "with-bdeps=y". I added it to EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS and now this didn't occur again.

You can close this bug is it is not really a bug.

Best regards,
Steffen

Ok, I'll just duplicate it against bug 274454 since that seems about the same.
