When fbsplash is set to silent in in the grub kernel line, the splash screen hangs and X fails with the following error: Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call If F2 is pressed to switch to verbose mode during startup or verbose is specified in the grub kernel line, X starts with no issues. This issue occurs regardless of the theme used, and appears to affect KDE users in particular. I am using uvesafb, splashutils-1.5.4.3, kde 4.3.3, sys-fs/udev-146-r1, sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.13, and xorg-server-1.6.5-r1. RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP makes no difference for me. Commenting out SPLASH_EFFECTS="fadein,fadeout" seems to work though. Looks like some sort of race condition.

I've been having this problem also. When silent splash was enabled KDM would hang at startup with the error message xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call I found the solution at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551310 Apparently KDM needs to be able to write to the directory /var/spool/gdm I did mkdir /var/spool/gdm && chmod 0777 /var/spool/gdm and the system boots happily into KDM from silent splash now. Don't know if that's the best solution, but it works for me.

Sorry, please ignore my post above. The fix posted doesn't actually work for me either. I changed the splash theme I was using from livecd-2007.0 to emerge-world, which was apparently what stopped it hanging... oops.
