firefox 3.6 crashes on startup with Segmentation fault; tried also with --safe-mode and LD_PRELOAD="/lib/libc.so.6" firefox but without success. Also, ran revdep-rebuild to be on the safe side. More updates on this: I've been able to start up firefox by removing all .mozilla dir, but it crashes immediately when I start to browse. It crashes when I try to open iGoogle page with a few widgets, for instance, or even trying to reload a bookmaks backup from json files. Maybe some issues with db files? This happens only on a intel 32 bits installation (see info), now I'm writing from a 64bit amd with FF 3.6 without problems. Now I'm recompiling ff and xulrunner with debug and no gcc optimizations at all.
I have the exact same problem also on 32-bit. I tried running strace, but I'm not too familier with it to really know what I'm looking for. The only thing of interest I found was: access("/home/<username>/.mozilla/firefox/91noecf5.default/content-prefs.sqlite-journal", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) Besides that the trace ended with: futex(0xb1d96f88, FUTEX_CMP_REQUEUE_PRIVATE, 1, 2147483647, 0xb1d16904, 346) = 1 futex(0xaa1500a0, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 1 gettimeofday({1264162263, 812457}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1264162263, 812486}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1264162263, 812508}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1264162263, 812668}, NULL) = 0 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) --- unlink("/home/cthulhu/.mozilla/firefox/91noecf5.default/lock") = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGSEGV, {SIG_DFL, [], 0}, NULL, 8) = 0 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, [SEGV], NULL, 8) = 0 tgkill(26522, 26522, SIGSEGV) = 0 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) --- +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ Segmentation fault Let me know if a complete trace could be useful.
After recompiling without any gcc optimizations things didn't changed. Well, may be unrelated, but you should upgrade glib (there was a certain change in your version, that was reverted in the next release). For the moment, firefox 3.6 works just fine for me on x86.
I have the same problem, glib is the latest from portage. If I start with a new profile, it works. When I try to import my old bookmarks, it segfaults. Might be something with sqlite?
I have the same problem. If I start firefox with both "-safe-mode" and "-private" it at least works for a few sites, otherwise it immediately crashes. glib is 2.22.3 and sqlite is 3.6.22 I also tried "USE=-* emerge -1 mozilla-firefox" but this didn't help.
compiled it with USE="custom-optimization" and it works now, amazing...
I've just tried with glib 2.22.4, no changes. Sqlite is 3.6.22-r1 I'll try in a short while with USE="custom-optimization", just to see what happens.

I remove file prefs.js and all works.
Same problem here with firefox 3.6 x86 32bit
(In reply to comment #13) > Same problem here with firefox 3.6 x86 32bit > I remove prefs.js and nothing changes. Crashing with "segmentation fault".

I've tried all of the above solutions and had no success. The thing that worked for me (though this is very unscientific) was downgrading to glib-2.22.2.
(In reply to comment #15) > (In reply to comment #14) > > (In reply to comment #13) > > > Same problem here with firefox 3.6 x86 32bit > > > > > > > I remove prefs.js and nothing changes. It could be a problem of glib. Moreover I noticed that it crashes when it search in the history (I write one letter in the address bar it appears the list, when I press a second letter it crashes ALWAYS). If I set "no suggestion" in the address bar it works. Moorover again it crashes when I manage my bookmark.
the addressbar searches the places.sqlite, so does the bookmark manager. Firefox also stores the history in there. I suspect there is a problem with sqlite. In the old ebuilds there was a USE flag for system sqlite which is gone now. I recompiled sqlite and then xulrunner & firefox with the custom-optimization flag. It's stable now even with my old profile.
Humm same here. Downgrade to 3.5.7 and wait for solution.
Firefox-3.6 works with custom-optimization USE flag. emerge --info Portage 2.1.7.16 (default/linux/x86/10.0, gcc-4.4.2, glibc-2.11-r1, 2.6.32-gentoo-r1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.32-gentoo-r1-i686-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Duo_CPU_T5470_@_1.60GHz-with-gentoo-2.0.1 Timestamp of tree: Sat, 23 Jan 2010 11:30:23 +0000 app-shells/bash: 4.0_p37 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.10 dev-lang/python: 2.6.4, 3.1.1-r1 dev-util/cmake: 2.8.0 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.1 sys-apps/openrc: 0.6.0-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 2.2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.65 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.9.6-r3, 1.10.3, 1.11.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.20 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.1 sys-devel/libtool: 2.2.6b virtual/os-headers: 2.6.30-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" ACCEPT_LICENSE="* -@EULA PUEL dlj-1.1 skype-eula" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/lib/hsqldb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/php/apache2-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cgi-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cli-php5/ext-active/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/sandbox.d /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="assume-digests distlocks fixpackages news parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-logs unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.zie.pg.gda.pl ftp://ftp.vectranet.pl/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo ftp://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/gentoo-mirror/" LANG="pl_PL.UTF-8" LC_ALL="pl_PL.UTF-8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="pl en is" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage/layman/zugaina /usr/local/portage/layman/Eaedificata /usr/local/portage/layman/kde-sunset" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X a52 aac acl alsa bash-completion berkdb bluetooth bzip2 cairo cli cracklib crypt cups cxx dbus dri dts dvd encode fam ffmpeg flac fortran gdbm gif gpm hal iconv jpeg kde lcms mad modules mp3 mudflap musepack ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin ogg opengl openmp oss pam pcre pdf perl pic png pppd python qt3 qt3support quicktime readline reflection scanner sdl session slang spell spl sqlite ssl svg sysfs tcpd theora threads tiff truetype unicode usb vcd vorbis win32codecs wmf x264 x86 xorg xvid xvmc zlib" ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="synaptics evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="pl en is nb no" NETBEANS_MODULES="cnd ide nb dlight harness" RUBY_TARGETS="ruby18" SANE_BACKENDS="hp" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="intel" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
