I've tried to install gentoo through stage3 (i686 20091215) following x86 Installation handbook. After "mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf"
I've got error message "ERROR: Could not get mirror list. Check your internet connection.". I've checked my connection preciously it was ok.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install gentoo due the x86 handbook with stage3-i686-20091215.
2.
3.

I don't remember mirrorselect to be part of an stage archive so which version did you use?
ping google.com works?
Check your /etc/resolv.conf as well.

For my attempt above I booted Gentoo LiveCd 2006.2 and used Terminal as root.
My previos attempts which I made the same way didn't show any kind of such problem.

To remove any doubts I've downloaded and booted installation minimal ISO
(20091103) and results are at all the same (the terminal freezes after message
"Downloading a list of mirrors ..." and I have to used Ctrl+C to stop it). The internet connection is 100% ok I used "links www.gentoo.org" to check it.

>> Check your /etc/resolv.conf as well
At this step of installation LiveCDs (or other installation envinronment) /etc/resolv.conf is used, net and internet connection through it was ok.

Show me "mirrorselect --version" please.
Please check 'http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml?passthru=1' with curl or so, to see if it works for you.
Also try 'mirrorselect -i -o' again.

Now everything worked allright thx to all participated in.

> Show me "mirrorselect --version" please.
2.0.0

> Please check 'http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml?passthru=1' with curl
Tiny XML containing "... Gentoo download mirrors ... Other Mirrors ... distfiles.gentoo.org ... Please upgrade to ..."

> or so, to see if it works for you.
> Also try 'mirrorselect -i -o' again.
Both "mirrorselect -i -o ..." and "mirrorselect -i -r -o" were successful.

Gentoo LiveCD 2006.2 mirrorselect version is 1.2, I've booted minimal_x86_20100119.iso and mirrorselect worked OK. Looks like the trouble was really in too old version of mirrorselect.

What does someone who is unable to upgrade to the newer version of mirrorselect do? I've tried to download the ebuild for mirrorselect-2.0.0 and ebuild it but I get the following error:

>>> Downloading 'http://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo/distfiles/mirrorselect-1.4.1.tar.bz2'
--2010-02-02 19:26:03-- http://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo/distfiles/mirrorselect-1.4.1.tar.bz2
Resolving mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de... failed: Name or service not known.
wget: unable to resolve host address `mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de'
!!! Couldn't download 'mirrorselect-1.4.1.tar.bz2'. Aborting.
!!! Fetch failed for mirrorselect-1.4.1.tar.bz2, can't update Manifest

Oddly enough, its trying to download mirrorselect-1.4.1.tar.bz2 and I don't seem to understand why. Any thoughts?

TIA
