Description Radosław Smogura 2009-12-09 20:30:14 UTC
After installing baselayout2 KDE 4.3.3 konsole opens, but no shell is available. Launching xterm in shows follwing bug:
Error 32, errno2. No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys

I hope I rewritten error message good. I assume KDE konsole didn't start from above reason.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Actual Results:

Adding udev-mount udev-postmount didn't resolver problem, nor adding devpts mount line to /etc/fstab

Only manual mounting "mount -t devpts none /dev/pts" resolved problem, but this is not way how this should work.

Below is emerge --info, I could paste now

what does it say during boot ? openrc should mount /dev/pts for you via the devfs init.d script

you're mixing stable and unstable, so make sure you have latest sysvinit package installed too
Comment 3 Radosław Smogura 2009-12-18 08:49:07 UTC
Mounting devfs resolved problem.

Because this can be problem, could you add some checks, after installing openrc, if all services are added properly?
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-12-18 16:07:37 UTC
it already does. you didnt test updating sysvinit like i suggested.
Comment 5 Sebastian Löbner 2010-01-06 21:25:02 UTC
At first I had the same problem as Radosław and stumbled upon this bugreport but i already updated sysvinit.
A friend of mine pointed me in the right direction that you have to have devfs in your runlevels. For me it is a link /etc/runlevels/boot/ pointing to /etc/init.d/devfs. For him as he is living on the bleeding edge (~) the link is in /etc/runlevels/sysinit/
Obviously both ways are working like a charm.

Hope this helps a bit.

P.S. It was my idea to delete the link from /etc/runlevels/boot/ because I thought devfs was deprecated BUT it is obviously not.

devfs in openrc is not the same as devfs in older kernels. Devfs in openrc just mounts the /dev filesystem.

Sebastian, If you are running openrc, I highly recommend putting this in your sysinit runlevel instead of boot.
