Description J.Taimr 2009-12-05 09:44:42 UTC
After upgrade from KDE-4.3.3 to KDE-4.3.4 the background image for kdm login screen is not displayed anymore, just black screen with the login chooser. After switching to text console and back the text console theme (if used) is copied onto the root window of the kdm screen.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge kde-meta-4.3.4
2. use kdm as a login manager and use a background image
3. after restart of the xorg-server there is no background image anymore

Actual Results:
No background image, only a black screen or evt. copy of the theme from a text console

Expected Results:
The background image, specified in /usr/share/conf/backgroundrc should be used

The situation is the same w. xorg-server-1.7.1 as like as with xorg-server-1.7.3. The temporary workaound is to put the line
xloadimage -onroot IMAGE
into /usr/share/conf/Xsetup, but the background image should be managed by KDE system itself.

I can confirm this behaviour.

The only way to get a background image in kdm is by using the themed greeter.

There are the requested logs. The attached kdm.logs do not contain anything useful, the errors present were/are present always (I am using nvidia-drivers).
Comment 8 Jouni Rinne 2010-02-04 05:09:29 UTC
The same problem here; using kdm-4.3.5, xorg-server-1.6.5-r1 and ati-drivers. The background is black, but when I log in, the desired background image is visible for a split second.

Have you tried kde-4.4.2 already?
Comment 10 J.Taimr 2010-04-18 20:16:07 UTC
It seems like this problem disappear in time. With kdm-4.4.2-r2 and xorg-server-1.8.0 everything works as expected.
The separate call xloadimage is not necessary anymore.

OK, resolving then. Feel free to reopen if the problem comes back...
