Description Jiri 2009-11-21 10:00:46 UTC
When pasting some text into mc running in Konsole by pressing a middle mouse button, not only the text I want to paste but also something more is added to the end of it.

For example, when I want to paste "Hello", actually "Hello#b=" is pasted. The additional string seems to be random, but always contains three characters, the first one is "#".

Everywhere else the pasting by middle mouse button works fine, also in Konsole itself. Version of my mc is 4.7.0_pre3 (marked stable in Gentoo), USE="X edit gpm nls -samba -slang". The problem occurs in all, mc command line bellow panels, any input field in mc, and mc's built-in editor. When pasting text by Konsole's paste action (shortcut key CTRL+Shift+V), no problem occurs. I am using kde-base/konsole-4.3.1-r1. There is no such problem when mc runs in xterm.

Could you please test if this bug is still valid with the just released 4.7.0 final?

thanks :)
Comment 3 Jiri 2010-02-19 20:20:04 UTC
Yes, it is still a bug also in app-misc/mc-4.7.0.1 and kde-base/konsole-4.3.3 .

Sorry for a slow response.
Comment 4 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-02-19 20:27:05 UTC
Then try 4.7.0.2 (but I assume it won't change anything) and report it to upstream ticketing system: http://www.midnight-commander.org/
Comment 5 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-03-10 10:41:25 UTC
Ladies, this looks more like bug in konsole...
Comment 6 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-07-11 07:14:42 UTC
@Jiri:
Does bug still render for you?
What TERM do you have in konsole? (echo $TERM)

In my case plain middle-button pressing in console does not paste the text in kde/x11 buffer at all and Shift-Mouse2 pastes text without garbage in mcedit.

(mc-4.7.3, konsole-4.4.4, no KDE env)

The same here. Middle mouse alone never worked for me. Shift-mouse2 works (always worked from day1) as expected (the same stable versions).

@Jiri please provide more information how to reproduce the issue.

Yes, of course, it is Shift+Mouse2. Sorry. And the garbage is still there. Current versions:
app-misc/mc-4.7.0.3
kde-base/konsole-4.4.5
Comment 9 Alex Alexander (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-02-01 08:03:07 UTC
mc-4.7.5 is in tree now, please check if this is still an issue.

if it still fails you'll have to submit a bug report to midnight-commander.org or KDE to let them know, otherwise it probably won't be fixed anytime soon :)

post the URL(s) here when/if you do. thanks.

How about 4.7?

Bug still there with mc-4.8.0 and KDE 4.7.2.

Please report upstream and link the bug report here.
Comment 16 Ben Sagal 2012-01-06 11:15:14 UTC
installing with use USE="-ncurses slang" seems to fix the problem (although there is a separate problem of not showing the text till the cursor moves)
Comment 17 Johannes Huber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-02-06 11:47:55 UTC
How about 4.8?

If no one's actually actively trying to fix this bug, then just close it. Asking about it on every release doesn't help anything and serves no purpose.

It's not that simple to fix when it's not reproducible on dev's machine.

Upstream touches mouse and tty code all the time. slang was updated
in tree recently. So there is a reason ping suffering users.

BTW, what you are using: USE=ncurses or slang? Do both render problem for you?

I use slang because of the bugs with ncurses. Other distros also ship mc built with slang. AFAIK, Gentoo is the only one that uses ncurses by default.

There's also another bug with ncurses. Deleting text (with DEL, not BACKSPACE) deletes the background. It also only happens in Konsole but not in xterm.

emerge -pv mc:
[ebuild R ] app-misc/mc-4.8.1-r2 USE="X edit gpm ncurses xdg -mclib -nls -samba -slang -test" 0 kB

Who is upstream? mc or konsole?
Comment 23 Johannes Huber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-02-09 13:48:22 UTC
I would say mc, because middle mouse works for me with other apps in konsole.

Loks like you actually used ncurses. Or was it to describe problem with
DEL key? I've switched to USE=slang by default in mc-4.8.2.

>=app-misc/mc-4.8.3 drops the ncurses USE flag, using ncurses only when slang is disabled (enabled by default).

How about stabilising a newer version then?

Newer mc is now stable on all the same archs as konsole. Is there anything else for us to do here?
