Description Stuart Shelton 2009-11-20 10:44:28 UTC
On multiple different different servers which seem to be running otherwise fine, I'm now getting:

>>> Emerging (1 of 13) dev-java/sun-jdk-1.6.0.17

 * sh "${DISTDIR}"/${A} --accept-license --unpack || die "Failed to unpack"
 *  The die message:

(where 12892 appears to be a PID)

/var/tmp/portage/dev-java/sun-jdk-1.6.0.17/ contains only:

./temp
./temp/logging
./temp/build.log
./temp/eclass-debug.log
./temp/environment
./homedir
./distdir
./distdir/jdk-6u17-dlj-linux-i586.bin -> /usr/portage/distfiles/jdk-6u17-dlj-linux-i586.bin
./work
./.exit_status

... and running the JDK install script/archive manually results in the same failure, no matter what the arguments passed to it (although without the --accept-license option, the EULA does display correctly). After letting the installer script fail (or even after interrupting it) I cannot find any install.sfx.* on the server.

Crazy hunch - there was just recently a set of emul-linux-x86-* package updates... could any changes in these packages now be preventing the (presumably 32-bit) JDK installer from running?

It's a shell script. What does your /bin/sh point to?
Comment 4 Stuart Shelton 2009-11-20 12:25:44 UTC
It's a shell script which extracts an encoded binary image and then executes it, though...

$ ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Nov 19 10:45 /bin/sh -> bash
$ equery  l app-shells/bash
[ Searching for package 'bash' in 'app-shells' among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [  ] app-shells/bash-4.0_p28 (0)

... as I mentioned, this is happening on a number of our servers - it's not just a single machine that's affected.

Yes, but it seems to fail to even execute the binary because it's not found. Right after it has successfully checksummed it. The only command it runs between checksum and execution is 'chmod +x'. Weird.

Comment 6 Vlastimil Babka (Caster) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-20 12:48:38 UTC
Is your /var/tmp on some non-standard filesystem, mounter with noexec or something?
Comment 7 Stuart Shelton 2009-11-20 13:08:34 UTC
Good thinking... /var is an a separate FS, but no odd options mount:

/dev/md2 on / type xfs (rw,noatime,nobarrier)
/dev/md1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noatime)
/dev/md5 on /home type xfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,nobarrier)
/dev/md6 on /var type xfs (rw,noatime,nobarrier)
/dev/md7 on /usr type xfs (rw,nodev,noatime,nobarrier)
/dev/md8 on /storage type xfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,osyncisdsync,usrquota,grpquota,nobarrier)

dmesg is also clean (no FS being remounted-ro due to error, etc.)

We have two identically configured servers (one is the fail-over partner of the other) and both are affected in the same way (this is the second 'emerg e--info' below)... suggesting something other than a random glitch. There are then several other servers which are also affected (first 'emerge --info'), but also more of this spec and config which are apparently not affected (yet?).
Comment 8 Vlastimil Babka (Caster) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-20 13:10:10 UTC
Oh, I see, you have x86 profile with x86_64 CHOST, that's just wrong, sorry. If your intention was 32bit userspace with 64bit kernel, see e.g. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/howtos/index.xml?part=1&chap=2
Comment 9 Stuart Shelton 2009-11-20 13:24:13 UTC
Dammit, you're right - so I do!

Many thanks for that, and well caught :D
