Description brad 2009-11-16 17:09:18 UTC
did the gentoo handbook install and everything was going flawless until i tried logging in my first client and I received an AUTH FAILED in my logs.
I tried re emerging everything and even forced a new version of >net-libs/courier-authlib-0.62.2 in .keywords.
Finally I stumbled across an obscure bug on debian about a missing libvpopmail.so causing the same issue.
sure enough, nahda!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/qmail-howto.xml
2.
3.

Actual Results:
always the same!!!

Expected Results:
missing module

This can only be treated as a doc bug -
take a look at the ebuilds - even 0.60.6
has a hard fail on vpopmail useflag.

Then how do I make it work?
Emerge with use flags fails and that is not in the docs....

By not trying to make it work.
There probably was a very good reason to drop that code.
Only thing that can be done here is updating the guide.

From the research I have done, I think you are correct.
VPoPMail seams to be dead or dying.
I am closing this ticket in my mind, due to supplemental support.
Thank you!

Nothing the GDP can do about it. If you look at the very beginning of the guide, there's already a big DRAFT disclaimer on it. It's not an official doc.

Reassigning to the vpopmail/qmail maintainer/team. The courier-authlib ebuilds need fixing as upstream stopped supporting vpopmail.

Mike, since this is your guide, you'll need to make any changes, like switching to dovecot or whatever. None of the GDP knows about that. Otherwise, we'll have to slap an OBSOLETE disclaimer at the top, and/or prune the guide if it's written for broken/nonexistent packages.

So obviously there is no bug at all, vpopmail is just deprecated / not supported by courier any more
