Description Juergen Rose 2009-09-21 14:27:36 UTC
Booting my thinkpad t41 /etc/init.d/hald prints "ERROR: hald faild to start". Looking for some hald processes I see:
root@lynx:/root(3)# ps -ef | grep hald
root      8178     1  0 15:58 ?        00:00:00 hald-addon-input: Listening on /dev/input/event0 /dev/input/event9 /dev/input/event3 /dev/input/event4 /dev/input/event1 /dev/input/event2

root      8188     1  0 15:58 ?        00:00:00 /usr/libexec/hald-addon-rfkill-killswitch
root     11988 10457  0 16:09 pts/0    00:00:00 grep --colour=auto hald

I set HALD_VERBOSE="yes" in /etc/conf.d/hald and find a lot of hald messages in /var/log/syslog:

Sep 21 15:58:13 lynx /etc/init.d/hald[8068]: ERROR: hald failed to start

So I suppose hald-addon-cpufreq, hald-addon-leds or hald-addon-rfkill-killswitch
is responsible for my problem. If I try to start X11 with gdm no keyboard or mouse input is accepted. At the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log there is the line:
(EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: unknown error (null)

I do not have /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Before the update of libxcb everything was working. Any hint is very appreciated. At an desktop pc with a similar software configuration I had no problems with hald after libxcb upgrade.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 2 Rafał Mużyło 2009-09-21 15:15:31 UTC
In such cases, you always start with revdep-rebuild.

Though, it may also be something wrong with dbus policy.
Comment 3 Juergen Rose 2009-09-21 15:27:17 UTC
I have the problem for about four days. In these four days I did several times revdep-rebuld, and two times 'emerge -vDe system'. It did not help.

Comment 4 Juergen Rose 2009-09-21 15:50:01 UTC
If I start once more revdep-rebuild, it complains about:
broken /usr/lib64/cpufreqd_nvclock.la (requires -lbackend)
broken /usr/lib64/root/libASImage.so.5.22 (requires libjpeg.so.62)

respectively:
* Assigning files to packages
*   /usr/lib64/cpufreqd_nvclock.la -> sys-power/cpufreqd
*   /usr/lib64/root/libASImage.so.5.22 -> sci-physics/root

'emerge sci-physics/root' fails, 'emerge -vD cpufreqd' works without problems.
But the next revdep-rebuild complains again about requiered -lbackend which I really don't have.
Comment 5 Juergen Rose 2009-09-22 17:12:00 UTC
I removed the nvida USE flag, erased sci-physics/root, reemerged dbus, policykit, hal, halinfo and all other packages which wrote some files /usr/share/hal or /etc/hal.
Revdep-rebuild does not complain about anything, but hald fails to start. And if I try to start X11 the console is locked, I can only login and reboot via ssh.

'ps -ef | grep hal' shows:
ose@lynx:/home/rose(1)$ ps -ef | grep hal
root      5558     1  0 19:07 ?        00:00:00 hald-addon-input: Listening on /dev/input/event0 /dev/input/event9 /dev/input/event3 /dev/input/event5 /dev/input/event1 /dev/input/event2

And I find in /var/log/syslog:

What can I still do?
Comment 6 Juergen Rose 2009-09-23 16:25:24 UTC
It is on a t61 and not t41.
Comment 7 Juergen Rose 2009-09-29 21:03:09 UTC
After an almost complete 'emerge -vDe world', /etc/init.d/hald still fails to start. Perhaps it is an error with IBM-ACPI?
Grepping for "error" in /var/log/syslog I get:

At thinkpads there ist no /proc/acpi/fan but /proc/acpi/ibm/fan.

This bug seems to be a duplicate of bug 273111.

At least reemerging glib and hal with CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" instead of CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
removed the problem with hald.
