Description Arthur D. 2009-09-20 20:07:56 UTC
I'm migrating from LFS to Gentoo currently and I found this interesting bug:
I noticed that when Opera web browser is run on behind and I move a window (terminal for example) over it, an ugly "train" remains. You can see what I'm speeking about on the video (see the URL above).
That was different from X server behaviour on my LFS system. So I spent several hours to find the root of the problem and found that LFS init system runs all services with nice level of 10 by default. And (what a surprise!) system responsiveness is better than when having nice level of 0.
I offer to add an option to change X server nice level to xinit script provided by Gentoo.
I'm gonna attach my version of the ebuild's "files" I use. You may alter it whatever way you want.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run opera (microsoft corefonts are installed), make it fullscreen.
2. Go to URL http://www.myopera.net/forums/arhiv/44775.html (the bug is well reproduced on that page)
3. Run Terminal (x11-terms/terminal) or any other windowed application and move it's window over opera. You should see nice trails.
4. If running XFce you should turn off window compositor (that's mandatory). It's off by default, anyway. Probably the bug is not reproduced when hardware accelerated windows manager is on. So, no beryl and others, please.
Actual Results:
"Nice" trails appear when moving the window. Check this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzSEzckheOs

Expected Results:
No trails. Background window should be redrawn immediately. Check this (same system, X server runs on nice level 10):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xplN_AUX-Y4

I think the bug should be easily reproduced. But who knows...
My hardware configuration:
CPU: Celeron 2.66 GHz (single-core)
VIDEO: NVidia AGP GeForce-6600 (with nvidia proprietary driver)

files to change in ebuild
Comment 2 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-09-21 06:34:00 UTC
I for one cannot reproduce this bug with my 4 year-old laptop, so I'm betting drivers are a more likely cause of the bug.

In any case, changing the nice level of Xorg probably will have other consequences. It's probably too dangerous to have such an option.

You might want to file a bug report at nvidia (there's a bug reporting script that comes with the drivers) instead.

Thanks
