When you start apricots, x will freeze. I don't think this has anything to do with nvidia. If I use the vesa driver, the result is the same. If someone else is using the ~arch, please test this and maybe you will have a better understanding of what the problem is.
I don't know if this gives you any hints but after compiling and installing the package manually into /usr/local, upon trying to start the game it dies complaining about this Could not open file: //apricots.shapes
This is the relevant part of my emerge.log . Somewhere in here there is a package that caused the problem, btw, I downgraded xorg-server to the previous release but that had no effect http://www.2shared.com/file/7736128/acae949a/emerge.html

Okay, I have tracked this down. If openal is built with the pulseaudio use flag against the newest version of pulseaudio, it breaks apricots. I am going to file a bug against openal.
