Already _saving_ a draft freezes thunderbird. Disabling auto-save temporarily helps; but sending an mail implicitly needs to save, thus trying to _send_ also freezes thunderbird.

Having installed gcc-4.3.4 again (slotted): # equery list gcc [I--] [ ~] sys-devel/gcc-4.3.4 (4.3) [I--] [ ~] sys-devel/gcc-4.4.1 (4.4) and # export PATH="/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.3.4/:$PATH" re-merging with the "old" gcc didn't help. ==> The problem is not localized in the pure thunderbird-code itself. <== Re-merging net-libs/xulrunner with the "old" gcc didn't help either. Any other info you prefer provided ?
Further freezes after receiving new e-mail (POP-3) when loading the new message.
(Sorry, but every single test involves killing thunderbird-process / restart. ) Opening a pure-ASCII e-mail reveals no problem at all. Just re-edit "as new" freezes. Starting Thunderbird from an x-term: Opening an e-mail containing pure-ascii attachment works, but trying to open the attacht xxx.txt throws: ** (gedit:14885): WARNING **: Throbber animation not found ** (gedit:14885): WARNING **: Throbber fallback animation not found either Opening an e-mail containing just a .pdf attachment freezes. . . . HINT: This problem arouse after a _complete_ re-build (system/world) with gcc-4.4.1. Even another complete re-build (system/world)1 with gcc-4.4.1 results into no difference at all. Checking with revdep-rebuild yielded "consistent". No other (error) output into the x-term.
RESULT: USE=-crypt emerge -a mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird seems to remove problems reported above. (Against paying the price with encrypted messages ...) I don't clearly recognize why those problems occur on _un-encrypted_ mails yet :(
RESULT: . . . This bug is related to >= gcc-4.3 upon amd64. . . . This bug is related to Bug # 246421, . . . . . esp. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=246421#c38 I copied the enigmail-0.95.7-r5 ebuild into my local overlay, added John Keeping's patch into the section: # Fix installation of enigmail.js epatch "${FILESDIR}"/70_enigmail-fix.patch # Make replytolist work with >0.95.0 epatch "${FILESDIR}"/0.95.0-replytolist.patch # - mkn. epatch "${FILESDIR}"/enigmail-no-strict-aliasing.patch <----- # - mkn. , create the manifest, emerge -a1 x11-plugins/enigmail and was able to use thunderbird with enigmail again. The section # Bug 246421 # Breaks builds with gcc-4.3 on amd64 if use amd64 && [[ $(gcc-version) == "4.3" ]]; then mozconfig_annotate 'gcc-4.3 breaks build on amd64 with -O2+' --enable-optimize=-Os fi a little bit later on is quite unfortunate, indeed : 4.4 != 4.3 ;(
