Description Gonçalo Silva 2009-09-04 03:34:21 UTC
After an update I did 3 days ago, Gnome stopped starting correctly. After filling the login credentials, some applications show up (on a blue background) like pidgin/conky and some other and then it all freezes - I never get to see the panels or the files/folders. I noticed there is an extra delay in the start process, so I guess(!) something is timing out.

I tried to create a new user. With this one, everything starts normally except I don't see any files/folders. Also:
1- If I try to connect to a wireless network using nm-applet, gnome freezes
2- If I try to open nautilus, I get two warnings stating "(nautilus:4118): Unique-DBus-WARNING: Error while sending message: Did not receive reply(...)" and then it quits without starting.
3- Process "gnome-keyring-d" eats up 100% CPU non-stop

Xorg log reports no errors. xsession_errors says:
"/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Warning: Only changing the first 11 of 32 buttons.
which: no keychain in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.4.1:/usr/games/bin)
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- gnome-session"

I've already upgraded/downgraded a lot of packages, from dbus to gnome-session and also pambase, changed some use flags (namely gnome-keyring usage) and the result is always the same. Revdep-rebuild says everything is ok and I re-emerged all my system yesterday. No results.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Turn on computer
2. Login to enter in gnome
3.

Actual Results:
Gnome starts some applications (pidgin, conky, destroytwitter) and then freezes [my user]

OR

Gnome starts normally but neither nautilus nor nm-applet work properly and sometimes these app freeze Gnome [dummy test user with no custom configuration]

Expected Results:
Normal gnome startup, like what happened before the last update

most likely -O3 problem like described in bug #282341

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 282341 ***
Comment 2 Gonçalo Silva 2009-09-04 11:16:12 UTC
I don't think their related but I've emerging my whole system again without -O3 and -O2 in it's place. I'll report back when it's done.
Comment 3 Gonçalo Silva 2009-09-08 23:49:45 UTC
It's definitely the same thing. To note that gcc 4.4 also behaves badly with -ftree-vectorize
