There is a bug in all prior nvidia-kernel drivers which causes a cpu run in xfree when executing openoffice (something with the fontserver causes this. I do believe that this bug is noted within the Changelog of nvidia-kernel.) Please correct me if i'm wrong, but this was a pain in the arse bug as there was nobody else posting about it on google, etc. After several mos, I happend across mention of it in w/i the nvidia #4496 changelog...what a PAIN! The bug is pertainent to all Geforce Go laptop video cards.) here's the clipping from the #4496 nvidia-kernel Changelog: * Fixed a hang on GeForce2 that occurred when using RENDER extension acceleration on some apps such as OpenOffice. (think about this. most users with laptops require openoffice. most laptops have the Geforce2 Go. this bug is not easily found. == not a good situation!) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: X cpu run/freeze. cannot kill X or anything. makes the box useless and only way for a safe reboot is to telnet/ssh in and execute teh reboot instruction. Too avoid this bug, users with this problem need to emerge /usr/portage/media-video/nvidia-kernel/nvidia-1.0.4496*.ebuild
I have been running this fine one 2.6 kernels, and are pretty ok with this. What about you other guys ? Foser, that gdm bug not nvidia-kernel related ... you ok with this?
yep, go ahead. The GDM thing was foser related.
Ok, thanks, marked stable -r3.
