The ebuild tells to add things to lilo.conf / grub.conf assuming that 
/boot is actually (hd0,0) or /hda1

Solution: 

cheap: tell that instructions assume /boot = (hd0,0)
better: check actual location of /boot and adapt instructions accordingly

Fixed in Portage. I took the liberty of adding the code from memtest86+ to a new memtest86-r2.
