http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml#doc_chap26 On that Install page the command: "modules-update" is shown as "update-modules". Further checking found that the man page for modules-update displays as UPDATE-MODULES ( 8 ) .... etc NAME update-modules This occurred on a Recent Stage 1 install finished on 2003/09/06. x86 Stage 1 install started on the 09/04 with the 20030806 tar file. The man page was checked on this system. Using Kernel gs-sources (Full compile). Compiled using genkernel --config. Followed all steps in Installation FAQ, except of course "update-modules". This can confuse new users.
modules-update and update-modules are the same, update-modules is just a symlink to modules-update. however, if you think there's a confusing part on the installation doc, please point it out so we can see if there's any improvement to be done with.
update-modules is deprecated ... the symlink only exists for backward compat ... it may be removed in the future please update any and all docs that read update-modules to say modules-update
Created attachment 17210 [details, diff] replace modules-update with update-modules Please review the patch
I figured it was some sort of Backward compatibility issue. It was no longer Symbolicly Link in the install I did. Neither "man update-modules" nor attempting to Locate / Find / or just run it "update-modules" would work on this install. I suggest updating the man page that gets installed as well as it comes out as: "UPDATE-MODULES ( 8 )" as well.
Patch reviewed. i've opened another bug for the manpage: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28101
