Chapter 5.d. states: "Note: A commented listing of all possible variables can be found in /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf.example. For a successful Gentoo installation you'll only need to set the variables which are mentioned beneath." make.conf.example now lives at /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example
Is this in the 2008.0 stage tarball, or is this from the more recent Portage versions? Our handbooks still refer to 2008.0 media, so we have to fix everything at once. If this bnew location is only present in the post-2008.0 Portage versions, then I'll have to make this a blocker for the handbook autobuilds tracker bug.

I reported this (in duplicate, sorry) and enclosed a patch in bug #287147
This was fixed some time ago. 'Cept for the mips handbook, which is its own little world.
