Description David Klempner 2009-07-26 21:39:11 UTC
All recent versions of media-sound/amarok-2 do not start on my machine.

I have no problem building them, but when I try to run I simply get:
% amarok -d
<unknown program name>(27977)/: Communication problem with "amarok" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" "

There is no splash screen or anything; nothing actually displays and there are no error messages even with -d.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Are you using KDE as your DE? re dbus and hal started?
Comment 2 David Klempner 2009-07-31 07:19:47 UTC
No, I'm using GNOME.

Both hald and dbus are started.

I suffer from the exact some bug, I'm using KDE(4.3.1) as my DE and both hald and dbus are started.

I experience exactly the same problem. It occured since I recently upgraded from KDE 4.3.0 to 4.3.1. And yes, hald and dbus are started. ;-)

I'm by no means a developer, so I'm not quite familiar with generating backtraces but this is what I did so far:

I set "-ggdb" in my [C,CXX]FLAGS and added "nostrip splitdebug" to FEATURES in make.conf. I also rebuild amarok with the "debug" USE flag.

Then I ran gdb but I'm afraid it didn't reveal any new information:

gdb /usr/bin/amarok
GNU gdb 6.8
This GDB was configured as "i686-pc-linux-gnu"...
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/bin/amarok
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]

<unknown program name>(31077)/: Communication problem with "amarok" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" "

Program exited with code 0377.
(gdb) KCrash: Application 'amarok' crashing...
sock_file=/home/wk095098/.kde4/socket-in102200/kdeinit4__0

If I can do anything to get a better backtrace please let me know.

Have you run revdep-rebuild after updating media-libs/jpeg? Are you sure you're not hitting bug 283406 in particular comment 14 ?
Comment 11 Chris Bruner 2009-09-12 04:13:20 UTC
I didn't have any jpeg-6 on my system but I did have jpeg-compat-6b And removing that has fixed my problem. Thank you.
Comment 12 mausballklauer 2009-09-12 09:24:52 UTC
Yay, it's working again! Removing jpeg-compat-6b did the trick. There were some broken packages afterwards but nothing revdep-rebuild couldn't fix. Thanks a lot!

Does anyone else still have this bug after doing the above?
Comment 14 Jonas M. Gastal 2009-09-12 15:18:16 UTC
I didn't have jpeg-compat-6b but rather jpeg-7, reemerging it fixed the problem for me.
Comment 15 Guy 2009-09-14 03:26:42 UTC
I had this same problem.

Removing "jpeg-compat" eliminated the problem:

# emerge -C jpeg-compat

Additional info 1:

However, I did run across this: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?p=716109&sid=5d6c121e9ec40305545393c5c6d22b68

According to this, the problem may actually be with qt4-common. What do I know? I'm just a user.

Additional Info 2:

After I unmerged jpeg-compat, I wanted to see if there might be additional issues. Specifically, I wanted to check what else might need jpeg-compat. Note the following:

pyrodyno ~ # emerge -s jpeg-compat

*  media-libs/jpeg-compat
      Latest version available: 6b
      Latest version installed: 6b
      Size of files: 620 kB
      Homepage:      http://www.ijg.org/
      Description: Library to load, handle and manipulate images in the JPEG format (transition package)
      License:       as-is
pyrodyno ~ # emerge -C jpeg-compat

 media-libs/jpeg-compat
    selected: 6b
   protected: none
     omitted: none

>>> 'Selected' packages are slated for removal.
>>> 'Protected' and 'omitted' packages will not be removed.

>>> Waiting 5 seconds before starting...
>>> (Control-C to abort)...
>>> Unmerging in: 5 4 3 2 1
>>> Unmerging media-libs/jpeg-compat-6b...

 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
pyrodyno ~ # emerge -puNDv world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] media-libs/jpeg-compat-6b  0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 new), Size of downloads: 0 kB
pyrodyno ~ # equery d jpeg-compat
 * Searching for jpeg-compat ...
!!! No matching package or all versions masked for jpeg-compat

Oopsies! I realize jpeg-compat is a transitional package. But the above is a bit weird to me. In order to determine what else needed jpeg-compat, I temporarily masked jpeg-compat in /etc/portage/package.mask. Re-running "emerge -puNDv world" showed that the current revisions of nxnode, nxserver-freeedition and nxclient are dependent on jpeg-compat.

Hope the above helps.
Comment 16 Guy 2009-09-14 05:23:51 UTC
For what it's worth, if you unmerge jpeg-compat, you _must_ re-emerge mplayer.

You probably also want to re-emerge any package with the USE="jpeg" flag turned on. Just to be on the safe side.
Comment 17 Guy 2009-09-14 18:09:37 UTC
More follow on information:

If you choose to remove jpeg-compat, you'll also need to re-emerge webkit-gtk. You probably want to do this before re-emerging all packages with USE="jpeg".

On my system, the following packages had USE="jpeg" set:

tiff lcms xv fltk dillo jasper sdl-image libquicktime gegl gpac dvgrab libvncserver cups wine djvu gimp xsane imagemagick transcode DirectFB netpbm imlib2 windowmaker fontforge dcraw okular krdc

Of these, gimp and the upgraded version of midori required the re-emerge of webkit-gtk before being able to complete successfully.
Comment 18 Guy 2009-09-14 18:20:58 UTC
Actually, revdep-rebuild shows a lot of stuff which wants to use libjpeg.so.62 {which is from jpeg-compat}. Your milage may very and I'm not a programmer.

Guy,

this is where --as-needed helps. Are you sure most of the breakage isn't caused by .la references? In any case, this is outside the realm of amarok.
Comment 20 Chris Bruner 2009-09-15 05:02:33 UTC
Actually I just spent most of today trying to get the system to work without the jpeg 6 librarys or the jpeg-compat ones. Half my system is version 7, half version6. Everything works with the jpeg-compat EXCEPT amarok.

So I definitely feel this is something to do with Amarok wanting jpeg-7, and finding and using jpeg-6, and having problems because of it.

None of the other software has this problem as far as I've seen.

Everything except binary only pkgs must be recompiled to use media-libs/jpeg-7. So, what you're saying about "half of..." is wrong and most likely the root of this problem. [1]

[1] http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-792906.html

> So I definitely feel this is something to do with Amarok wanting jpeg-7, and
> finding and using jpeg-6, and having problems because of it.

If one of the indirect libs (deps) amaroK is using is still built against libjpeg.so.62 instead of libjpeg.so.7, there will be problems for sure.
Comment 22 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-09-19 17:56:40 UTC
And here is the list of packages that need jpeg-compat we know of,

http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/misc/rindex/media-libs/jpeg-compat

All binary only packages. There's no excuse to use it for anything else,
and if you find a package that needs it please open a new bug.

So, unless amaroK or Qt4 has somewhere in it's source files line with dlopen("libjpeg.so.62") this bug should be closed as INVALID.
Comment 23 David Klempner 2009-09-19 19:49:28 UTC
After getting rid of the last traces of libjpeg.so.62 on my system, amarok now works for me.
Comment 24 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-09-22 10:27:40 UTC
I take it that the silence is a sign of it working now. Closing.
Comment 25 Marco Napetti 2009-09-22 17:43:35 UTC
I yust installed kde-4.3.1 and I have the same problem.
No traces of jpeg-compat, I have only libjpeg7 installed.
Revdep-rebuild tells my system is consistent.
