I opened bug 272846 because net-misc/whois did not resolv .tel requests properly. And I think the problem could also exist in this package. I can not test it myself, but there is very high probability it is still broken like the other ones. Please, check how this package handles .tel requests. Thanks.

I seems that Net-XWhois isn't maintained. https://rt.cpan.org/Public/Dist/Display.html?Name=Net-XWhois lists a number of patches/bugs that weren't applied for a long time. No other package depends on Net-XWhois any more. So I mask it for removal.
(In reply to comment #1) AWStats plugin "hostinfo" needs this perl module to resolve IPs / domain names. With this one removed, no stats will be shown when hostinfo is activated. I see the point in arguing that an unmaintained package is never a good idea but it would break awstats despite not being a "real" dependency.

Looking at the buglist in comment #1 the hostinfo plugin isn't working well even if XWhois is installed.
