Several Gnome users have run into this. Gnome-power-manager's "tray" icon is the Gnome broken image icon instead of the little battery & plug & whatnot. Other icons do work, such as the hibernate & suspend icons. See Forum thread for links to screen shots: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-5839949.html It appears that the icons installed into /usr/share/gnome-power-manager/icons/hicolor/ work, but those installed into /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ do not. Also of note is the fact that if you insert a link at ~/.icons/hicolor that points to /usr/share/icons/hicolor the images appear correctly. Reproducible: Always

This also occurs on gnome-power-manager-2.24.4-r2. We also see a similar problem with Compiz's ccsm.
Also some blueman and evolution icons suffer from this. http://omploader.org/vMXc2Zw
this also happens with gnome-power-manger-2.26.2 from gnome overlay
It can't really be the fault of gnome-power-manager, because evolution and blueman are also affected. And now, I removed all compiz stuff and emerged again and in CCSM I don't have the categories icons on the left and fusion icon is missing the system tray icon.
I found this older bug <http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474678> in Gnome's Bugzilla, that said an older version had a problem, but the guy fixed it by upgrading to hicolor-icon-theme-0.10 and closed it himself. But I already have hicolor-icon-theme-0.10 installed, and reinstalling it didn't fix anything. I also found this older bug <http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449274> that says all of g-p-m's icons should go in a different folder, and is resolved as fixed. All the icons in that folder seem to work, it's the other folder that these were supposed to be moved from that doesn't work for us. I don't know why these images were left behind, or if they were added later. I've opened http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587466 upstream to see if they have any better ideas. But I don't know if this is a g-p-m issue, a Compiz issue, a Gnome issue, a theme issue, or the interaction of two or more of the above....
