This happend after upgrading the QT to 4.5.1. I tried to rebuild sip and PyQt4 after upgrading the QT, but this does not help to build the qtiplot. This problem is also observed on another x86 machine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. update to qt 4.5.1
2. emerge qtiplot-0.9.7.7

Actual Results:
The build failed

Comment 1 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-21 22:51:34 UTC
Does the package compile successfully after you disabled ccache?
Comment 2 Luyang Han 2009-06-22 08:27:15 UTC
No. The compilation still failed.
Comment 3 Luyang Han 2009-06-26 15:40:44 UTC
The problem seems to be linked with sip and PyQt4.
With sip-4.8.1 and PyQt4-4.5.1, the compilation stops at the step mentioned before. After downgrade to sip-4.7.9 and PyQt4-4.4.4-r2, the compilation finished without any problem.

Perhaps one should change the dependency description of this package?

Same problem here. sci-visualization/qtiplot-0.9.7.7, dev-python/PyQt4-4.5.1, dev-python/sip-4.8.1.

Comment 5 Luyang Han 2009-07-31 08:15:57 UTC
It seems that this problem is still not solved. Perhaps one should look into the new qtiplot version and check this problem again?

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275167
Comment 6 Luyang Han 2009-08-03 07:50:00 UTC
In the new version of qtiplot-0.9.7.8 the problem remains. According to the upstream qtiplot can only be compiled against the following packages:
Python 2.5, SIP (4.7.9) and PyQt (4.4.4)

Thus I think this is indeed an upstream issue. Or perhaps one can try to change the dependency of the package, in order to make sure that it works.
Comment 7 urcindalo 2009-09-01 07:16:11 UTC
I stumbled upon the same problem. I just installed KDE 4.3 on my new laptop, so SIP (4.7.9) and PyQt (4.4.4) are no options for me, not to mention the stable python version in the tree is 2.6.x.

With KDE 4 stabilization in the near future I think something has to be done with this package. I use it on an almost daily basis and my only option right now is to run it inside a virtual machine.

Since the problem seems to be upstream, can't we just slot SIP and PyQT versions? I'm no programmer, so I apologize if my question sounds stupidly.
Comment 8 Markus Dittrich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-09-09 01:51:14 UTC
I doubt that the python team is willing to slot
these packages just because of qtiplot, assuming
that slotting is possible in the first place.

Has somebody been in touch with qtiplot's upstream
and asked them about their plans in supporting
more recent versions of python/PyQT/SIP?

Also you might want to have look at scidavis. It is
fairly similar to qtiplot and works fine with
the latest PyQt last time I checked.

Thanks,
Markus
Comment 9 Luyang Han 2009-09-16 07:50:49 UTC
According to the upstream this issue is fixed in the SVN version. So the next release would be fine again.
Comment 11 Luyang Han 2009-09-17 07:18:18 UTC
I just checked that. The problem is indeed solved in the SVN version. The version number is shown as 0.9.7.9 there.
Comment 12 Sébastien Fabbro (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-09-18 18:42:04 UTC
Fixed in qtiplot-0.9.7.7-r1.
