Description Richard Bromley 2009-06-17 01:16:58 UTC
In the xdm init.d script, in the "stop" function, start-stop-daemon --test is run on the display manager process before it terminates it. This produces a couple of loathsome messages in the console to the tune of "Would send signal to xxxx" where "xxxx" is a PID. These messages are of no interest to and should not by seen by end users. They are also extremely irritating.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run /etc/init.d/xdm start, if the "xdm" service is not running. An X server and a display manager must be properly set up first.

2. Run /etc/init.d/xdm stop, and note its output.

Actual Results:
Tiresome messages were put out, and I was put out.

Expected Results:
It should not have shown the messages.

I use GDM as my display manager. I do not think its specific version has any impact on this bug. The bug probably occurs with other display managers as well.

This is probably a baselayout-1 issue. In any case, this error message doesn't appear on any of the ~arch systems I could try.

FTR, this error message is not sent directly from the xdm init script so there's nothing we can do here. Maybe start-stop-daemon is the one to blame.

Thanks
