This is because XDG_DATA_DIRS variable, when it's set to: /usr/local/share:/usr/kde/3.5/share:/usr/share:/usr/share/gdm it breaks because /usr/share should be before /usr/kde/3.5/share (like in 3.5.9)
/usr/share should probably not be before /usr/kde/3.5/share since if you got kde 4 installed beside kde 3.5 all kde 4 thingies will be unsed instead of the kde 3.5 stuff, so it will go awry very soon

Yes, I know it's "ugly", but it would allow to make it work until kde-3.5 is finally dropped with kde-3, kde-4 and gnome (even still allowing to see KDE-3 apps desktop entries under gnome)
This problem seems to be caused by: /usr/kde/3.5/share/icons/hicolor/index.theme
