Description Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-05 10:45:16 UTC
Hiya guys,

Just to let you know, I've been experiencing a lot of hangs and freezes due to 0.9.15 (where, even though it's only a minor version number increment, they made a large number of changes to the internals [1]). So I've masked it off, but gnome-media has a (USE based) dependency on pusleaudio-0.9.15. I tested it against pulseaudio-0.9.14 and it seems to compile and run fine against it. Was there a specific reason for requiring the latest pulseaudio? If not, could it be lowered to at least 0.9.14 please?

We could lower dep, but it would imply automagic changes in compiled code when someone builds it against 0.9.15 which is not a good thing.

Related with your pulse problem, have you tried to disable glitch-free? Editing /etc/pulse/default.pa and appending "tsched=0" to the line "load-module module-hal-detect" seems to be the proper way of disabling it

Good luck

Thanks for the hint Pacho, it looked like it would help (and did for a while), but unfortunately after a while I started getting pulsing sound (the sound took longer to play and had long quiet pauses). I've had to go back to 0.9.14. I really hope 0.9.16 comes out soon and solves these issues... 5:\

Lennart doesn't like making releases for some stupid reason, you will have to get a hold of patchsets that other distributions apply since even critical fixes don't get releases.

Well, given that's their stance, would it be possible to allow people to remain on an older version of pulseaudio, in case they're experiencing pain with the latest version?

What are the automagic issues with 0.9.15 vs 0.9.14?

0.9.14 was dropped, then, I think that this should be closed and you should try to report pulseaudio-0.9.15 problems instead :-/

It's all right, I'm one more problem away from completely abandoning pulseaudio. The Gentoo Gnome devs have done a great job of ensuring ALSA support's still present in gnome (the volume control was nearly ditched). As for pulseaudio, I haven't had a chance to bother with network streaming, and "per-application audio" isn't enough of a benefit for making sound such a headache. ALSA, despite its flaws, works pretty well in all circumstances, pulseaudio only works well in very specific circumstances...

Given 0.9.14's been dropped, I'll mark this as WONTFIX.

Have you tried to contact to pulseaudio upstream? Well, I also don't use pulseaudio because I don't need it (or I thing so...), but I think that it improves fast and usually upstream is opened to requests.

I would suggest you to take a look on pulseaudio mandriva patches:
http://svn.mandriva.com/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/packages/cooker/pulseaudio/

and test them in a local overlay, because (as far as I have seen), Colin Guthrie does a great job maintaining pulseaudio in mandriva ;-)

Good luck!

Thanks, I have (see [1]). They've been completely unresponsive, and in fact, the most help I've had looks to have been from Colin himself!

On my work machine it's turned out to be pretty infeasible, given its apparent inability to allow multiple users to use the soundcard at the same time (it almost seems like it's by design) without opening network ports.

For my home machine, with Skype, it was becoming a lot of work for very little benefit. I've left an old version of 0.9.14 in my overlay which I use to get by, and when there's a new release I usually end up using a whole day trying to see if I can get it all working nicely, and so far I've failed.

Thanks for the link to the Mandriva patches though, I'll try and give them a go at some point. Do you happen to know how often these patches make it upstream?

I am now CCed in mdv bug ;-)

About mdv patches... in the past (for example when 0.9.9 and 0.9.10 releases) most of the patches were added by upstream in following major versions. Be sure that every patch applied (except 05xxx*... that are mdv customizations) are sent to upstream when Colin tests them enough and usually are accepted.
