Created attachment 193459 [details] Build log
I have no idea why this package is assigned to embedded@. Looking at the ChangeLog none of the people who ever touched it were ever involved in embedded. Looks like patrick did the last bump. TreeCleaners.. / maintainer-needed
Try again with MAKEOPTS=-j1. If libowfat is failing to compile for you, perhaps you should file a bug upstream, otherwise, attempt to compile with gcc-4.3 and complain again if it still fails to build.
It compiles fine here, please unmask again: Portage 2.2_rc33 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0, gcc-4.3.3, glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2, 2.6.31-rc4-00350-g658874f x86_64) CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe -g"
Somebody got to pick this up before I unmask it. There's a build failure, maybe it's gcc 4.4, somebody COULD try it out. But _it need a maintainer first_, given that embedded refuses to do it an Patrick does not. Robin, want to pick it up? unmask it, assign it to yourself, and change this into a gcc-4.4 bug because that's what it is. You should know the drill.

You should know the drill. > Could you attempt to reproduce the build failure with -asneeded turned off, since as per the qa '--as-needed' documentation hosted on gentoo.org, the --as-needed LDFLAG is unsupported?
flameeyes: Btw, if you persist in filing bugs against as-needed stuff, and want more of a response, persuade enough people to change it from officially unsupported to something more supported: "this flag is not considered safe for production use and not supported in any way by Gentoo." http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/asneeded.xml
I'll change the wording of the guide. This is not an --as-needed issue though as far as I can see; it is reasonable that it might be a gcc4.4 problem but not --as-needed.
flameeyes: Ok, if it's NOT an as-needed problem, can you please attach a log with a non-as-needed compiler?
I'm currently fighting with getting lxc to behave, but I can tell you quickly why I don't think it's an --as-needed problem before I start considering this so much of a timedrain that I won't care. The error reports a missing symbol: fmt_strm_internal.c:(.text+0x11): undefined reference to `__builtin_stdarg_start' _that_ symbol is provided by gcc itself. In addition to that, the package builds statically, so --as-needed-like behaviour is _always_ present. My theory? GCC 4.4 added some further optimisation or some further standard implementation, and now the code is partly emitted depending on builtins that libowfat, being a standalone C library, cannot afford to use.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dietlibc/+bug/381215 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=530861 This problem is NOT a problem with libowfat, but a problem with dietlibc and gcc-4.4. Above launchpad link is result 2 in google search for __builtin_stdarg_start. Debian bug references ubuntu/launchpad bug and offers a patch solution for dietlibc.
So whoever wants to pick up maintainership of this can unmask it. Please let me repeat: QA team won't unmask this without a maintainer picking it up. Why? Because the next bloody time something breaks it'll be broken again and we have to go through this. The reason why we use a 60-days grace period is to find a new maintainer for the thing to be saved.
