Two latest news at mc.redhat-club.org, one in Russian and one in English: 1. "Official" mc 4.6.2 released. The "official" release of Midnight commander 4.6.2 was out at February 1st, 2009. This is mostly bugfix release supposed to fix a handful of some longstanding issues. The most notable bugs has been fixed: * A body of backend that manages symlinks transferred via FISH has been rewritten (no more hangs when copying symlinks in "shell link" mode). * It's now possible to work with files and directories that contains special symbols or spaces at the beginning or at the end of their names. All changes are listed in the NEWS file comes with tarball (http://www.midnight commander.org/downloads/mc-4.6.2.tar.gz). Please note that this release doesn't include official UTF-8 support which has been scheduled for 4.7 branch. MC' developers are very aware of it's importance, so special GIT branch with UTF-8 patches named MC-4.6.2-utf8 has been created. Disto maintainers may run % git diff mc-4.6.2 mc-4.6.2-utf8 after receiving clone of the repository to get this patches. It is useful when pasting text from the buffer. - C++ syntax highlighting with Qt macros support from Debian added. For public/private/protected access qualifiers brightmagenta color is used, this enhances classes visual perception. - Port number for ssh connection may be specified. - On connection error (e.g. ssh) screen is redrawn, thus faulty connection artifacts are eliminated. Also artifacts for the first successful ssh connection are removed. - Translation file no.po is renamed to nb.po. ... and lot of other enhancements. I'm not a Gentoo maintainer, but I consider mc is not mplayer to update it's ebuild for yet another svn (git) snapshot regularly. mc, at least, get released occasionally.

I'm definitely not right person to argue with. Suggest live ebuild and let maintainer decide what to do. And don't forget about overlays, of course.

I guess we can forget about 4.6.3 and 4.6.4 and use 4.6.2 or try to build mc from git or maybe wait for 4.7.
