virtual server, right? Please post emerge --info.

I'm 95% positive this is a dupe of bug 266735 in which case you need to upgrade the openvz kernel, if you can't you need to get your providor to upgrade it.

Comment 3 Peter Alfredsen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-27 18:38:04 UTC
233280 is the one. This is a kernel bug. Get your provider to upgrade their (by now ancient-ish) kernel.
As a work-around, do:
cd /
wget http://tinderbox.dev.gentoo.org/default-linux/x86/sys-apps/coreutils-6.10-r2.tbz2
tar -xjf coreutils-6.10-r2.tbz2
<insert praying>
If this works, you should now mask >=sys-apps/coreutils-6.12
and do:
emerge -1 coreutils (to get your system into a sane state again)

Thanx for help. I asked my provider to upgrade the kernel. Meanwhile your workaround worked for me.
