Description Maxi Combina 2009-04-19 12:27:24 UTC
gcc-4.3.2 has been marked as stable, so I am recompiling world with the new gcc. virtualbox-ose-1.6.6 is the only version marked as stable.

However, 1.6.6 can not be compiled with gcc-4.3.2:

>>> Failed to emerge app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-1.6.6, Log file:

>>>  '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-1.6.6/temp/build.log'

 * Messages for package app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-1.6.6:

 * there are known problems with gcc 4.3 and the virtualbox
 * recompiler stuff. Please use at least a version of gcc < 4.3
 *

It is a little odd, imho, that a new compiler is marked as stable but there are stable packages that won't compile.

I also had similar problems with other packages, but I think this goes into a different bug.

Maybe it is time to unmask some version of virtualbox-ose that compiles with gcc-4.3.2?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge virtualbox-ose
2.
3.

# emerge --info

Maybe we should convert this bug into a stabilization request for some recent 2.1.x version?

Maybe. I don't really know how to do that. Or if this is the right place to report this issue.
Please feel free to forward me to the appropriate place if necessary.

Yes, i think it's time to move to a more recent release for example 2.1.4
since the 1.x brach is now totally unmaintained from upstream, and is very
hard to fix problems with this release (this applies to 2.0.x too).

Talking about the recent 2.2.0 release, many users are reporting networking
and/or generic problems with networking [networking support for guests],
but i need more testing to confirm this.

There is a stablereq in process for virtualbox-ose-2.1.4. So, thanks for the report and you can monitor bug 267267
