After upgrading to Xorg 1.5, which turned stable, I ran into the font rendering problem described in 256586.  The current stable legacy nvidia driver is 96.43.09.  I updated to 96.43.11, which fixed the font rendering problem.  Not a big deal, but it took some time for me to figure out what was the problem.

Apart from bug #229771, I can't find anything that could halt stabilisation, and it's been a month now. It does fix the font rendering issue of bug #256586 too.
