Description Sergei Danilov 2009-03-28 18:02:41 UTC
I can not find the solution for high cpu usage of plasma on my laptop.
it's started after regular upgrade of my system i made at 26march.Here the main packages were upgraded
xorg-server-1.5.3-r2 ->xorg-server-1.5.3-r5
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.37->x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.41
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.41->x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.41
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.28-r3->sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.29
All these packages i tried to revert back , but this does not solve the problem.There were also a bit of other packages upgraded, which I didn't try to revert back (too lot small packages)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install latest kde 4.2.1 ebuilds, including plasma
2. create new user "testuser"
3. login to kde 4.2.1 as testuser .Leave all widgets plasma shows to you by default

Actual Results:
->from start plasma eats about 3% of cpu and in a 30 minutes it becomes about 75% and does not answer on any clicks

Expected Results:
plasma has not use much cpu and hang

some stuff about my machine:
core2duo amd64bit system
kde 4.2.1
nvidia 7300Go with x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.41
I would be glad for any suggestion or solution how to solve this problem

I tried to execute plasma with debug and nofork options , but didn't get any valuable info
Comment 3 Sergei Danilov 2009-03-28 18:33:33 UTC
forgot to mention qt : I'am using QT-4.5
Comment 4 Sergei Danilov 2009-03-28 22:22:01 UTC
figured out that issue exists when kwin composite effects are enabled.
so it's specific to composite

Comment 6 Sergei Danilov 2009-04-06 07:31:18 UTC
I can confirm that problem still exists if composite effects are disabled , hence reproduced not always after login. With composite it reproduces always.
Updgrade to nvidia-drivers-180.44 , which recently were released didn't solve the problem
Comment 7 Robert Maynard 2009-04-14 02:13:52 UTC
I'm getting a similar issue, text diappears from widgets and taskbar, etc, as if plasma semi-crashed, but process remains. After killing and running in terminal, I get the following output: http://pastebin.com/m4a5cc1c6

emerge --info: http://dpaste.com/32895/

xorg.conf: http://dpaste.com/32896/

Problem existed on kde4.1.4, 4.2.1, and 4.2.2

I solve plasma problem by stoping hald service.
(kde-4.2.4 ~x86)

It's true about hald .. it seems I found also the reason of my laptop - I have the broken web camera driver and /var/log/messages every 2 seconds updated with lines

It seems hald constantly informs that new device appeared & dissapeared and kde tries to turn on && turn off it.Don't mind - may it's performed by kde4 mount applet , maybe by kdecore... But blacklist the webcamera driver solved the problem for me...
kde guys should include some device check and give up if device was not sucessfully turned on by 3'rd try for example
Comment 10 Kanstantsin Shautsou 2009-08-06 00:03:58 UTC
Try `chmod 755 -R /usr/share/kde4/` according to https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261813
