Please post the "emerge --info" of the machine where the package fails.
I have same error, it can be solved by copy /var/lib/texmf/web2c/tex/tex.fmt to /var/lib/texmf/web2c/tex.fmt . It's bad solution, but it work.

its just because you didnt remove all the stray files from tetex, see: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/tex/texlive-migration-guide.xml#doc_chap4 its the same as the "Format was written by (pdf)etex" section
Thank you - after deleting the named directory the installation of mh runs through. On the other system tetex never was installed... [OT: do I have to close the bug or is it up to the gentoo-team after I verified your solution?]
