After installing dev-db/postgresql, configuring it and starting it (it runs fine), i can't find any log. I've tried adding '-l' to /etc/conf.d/postgresql:PGOPTS, setting /etc/conf.d/postgresql:PGLOG and various other things as found on internet. I've looked for files in /var/log and /var/lib/postgresql/ and could not find a log file or any indication on how to get one. More importantly, nothing on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/postgres-howto.xml is about log, while it is (to me) one of the most important thing to consider when installing any kind of server stuff on linux. Reproducible: Always Expected Results: I think a default installation should have a (minimum) log The documentation should tell where to look for problems, and/or how to get logs working.
Well, this is mainly a documentation problem. Because we follow upstream there and they don't configure logging per default. The place to look on how to configure logging is upstream's documentation...
maybe you could at least say it somewhere (mainly on the documentation page on the main site, which is pretty useless without that). I suggest to add also that the main configuration files are : * /var/lib/postgresql/data/postgresql.conf * /var/lib/postgresql/data/pg_hba.conf That would have helped a lot...
