Description Navid Zamani 2008-11-24 09:31:00 UTC
This is a bit complicated, so bear with me. :)

- The old synce (eg 0.9)
  * uses app-pda/synce-rra.
  * supports app-pda/synce-kde.
- The new synce (eg 0.12)
  * uses app-pda/synce-librra.
  * supports app-pda/synce-kpm.
- Right now, only synce-kde (not kpm) supports Windows Mobile 2003 (pre WM5) devices.
- Today I updated synce, and had to
  * manually set "app-pda/synce -hal serial" to make it support WM2003.
  * also set "app-pda/synce -kde" to stop synce-kpm from being installed. This makes no sense, since I use KDE here.
  * install synce-kde.

Now installing synce-kde of course fails because the required app-pda/synce-rra is blocking the installed app-pda/synce-librra-0.12.

This leaves me in a very messy state. Do I now have to downgrade synce? If yes, what's with the dependencies? And how would I block the non-compatible (to WM2003) ebuilds, whiel still allowing an update when a compatible new version comes out?

You see... this is clearly non-optimal. ;)

I therefore recommend, to configure/compile synce-kde in a way that it automatically can use either app-pda/synce-rra or app-pda/synce-librra, depending on which one is installed. Their APIs should be nearly the same and compatible, so I think it's only a matter of changing the ebuild, and maybe a small patch.

In the long term, synce-kpm should of course support WM2003, but that's the job of the synce-team and not the job of the Gentoo maintainers, right?

The most important thing of all, is that we offer two things:
1. Stop breaking working old-style synce installations (using synce-kde) trough a simple update of @world.
2. Telling users who already updated, how to undo the damage.

I'm completely willing to help and work with you (as far as my knowledge allows it). Please just ask me here if you need something.

P.S.: Mozilla crashed. You suck! ;)))

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Severity was set to "Major" because synce-kde (and therefore the normal way of using synce) becomes non-usable for every WM2003 device, and because the support for a whole device class can be called a major feature. :)

Just wanna say that I don’t care about this bug anymore, as I replaced the device with a shiny new Linux phone. :)

Does anyone care anymore, or can I close this bug?

Hi mescalinum, synce-kde is not supported by the SynCE team anymore (unfortunately for 2003 users). This can be closed and synce-kde removed!

Ok, I will close this bug. Nobody should use WinCE anyway.
