Smplayer has a very useful option which, when volume normalisation is enabled, adjusts the playback volume just before actual playback is started. It passes mplayer the '-volume' option. Mplayer needs a patch for this to work. As smplayer and mplayer itself are both in portage, I think that both programs capabilities should be 'synced', so it would be really useful to be able to integrate the patch when needed, via a USE-Flag. Reproducible: Always The patch, startupvol.diff used to be availible in smplayer's svn repo at sourceforge, but I couldn't find it right now. But I'm sure you're aware of it anyway...

You should propose/push the patch upstream...
The patch is already applied upstream, although I don't remember which svn revision. But if you get current svn (for example with the live ebuild in berkano overlay), you can be sure that patch is included.
confirmed, introduced in revision 27872
