Description idiotbg 2008-10-30 16:27:01 UTC
After trying to unmount a NFS filesystem (flags rw,hard,intr,nfsvers=3rw,hard,intr,nfsvers=3) on which I have opened files, umount -f says "umount2: Device or resource busy". Mount does not show the filesystem as mounted, though I can do different operations on it as if it is mounted. Closing the opened files does not really unmount it either. Executing umount -f again after closing all files really unmounts the filesystem.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. mount NFS filesystem
2. open some files (e.g. play some music)
3. umount -f the filesystem

Actual Results:
mount does not show the filesystem as mounted, though it appears to still be mounted

Looks like a nice feature to me. Could you rephrase this into a real problem (describe why you must really unmount it right there and then, and how apparently umount implies -l (lazy unmount)?

Please post your `emerge --info' too.

Either that or mark this bug as a duplicate of bug #244976. :)

Bug #244976 involves suspend, so I consider it a different case (umount is not invoked rendering the filesystem broken). From the man page:

-f Force unmount (in case of an unreachable NFS system). (Requires kernel
              2.1.116 or later.)

-l Lazy unmount. Detach the filesystem from the filesystem hierarchy now, and
cleanup all references to the filesystem as soon as it is not busy anymore.
              (Requires kernel 2.4.11 or later.)

it doesn't say that -f implies -l and if I close all opened files, the filesystem is not unmounted as -l should imply (though I did not invoke umount with -l). This is a problem, since if I invoke umount I expect it to unmount the filesystem and mount shows it as not mounted. So mount is lies! And the filesystem is not unmounted when I close all references so I am left with mounted filesystem that I am not aware of, and this is a problem to me :). I consider a problem everyting that does not work as it is supposed to. So a possible solution is to fix mount so that it shows the apparently mounted filesystem or fix umount, so that it really unmounts it (moreover I used -f).

When I close the water tap, I suppose water stops, I should not continue flowing :) if if does I will flood my appartment, which is a problem.

I use nfs-utils 1.1.0-r1

Sorry for the grammar mistakes, I edit a lot in this textbox.
A preferred solution for me would be, that umount really unmounts the filesystem. Now as I read the man page carefully, it says (for -l) "Detach the filesystem from the filesystem hierarchy now", which does not happen, since I am able to browse the filesystem, so it is not detached! And still I didn't invoke "-l". I consider it a BUG, not a feature. Hope this is enough rephrasing.
