Description Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-28 08:27:30 UTC
When kdm is started on boot, it loads fine and seems to work (Session can be choosen, etc.) However, when the first user tries to log in it segfaults and freezes the screen.

The behaviour is independent of the session that is choosen.
starting X with "startx" works fine.

Switching to console and /etc/init.d/xdm restart successfully restarts kdm and logins are possible occasionally, but not always. Seems to be random.

System log shows :
kdm[2189]: segfault at 6 ip b7f66921 sp bf877658 error 4 in ld-2.6.1.so[b7f5c000+1d000]

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot with kdm started in default runlevel
2. try to log in
3.

Actual Results:
screen freezes. System is fine, switching to console works.

Comment 1 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-29 13:58:50 UTC
Here is some more information maybe related:

When locking the screen using kde's lock mechanism, there are problems on deactivating the lock.

To reproduce:
1.) Lock the screen, leave it locked for 5 minutes or more.
2.) Wait 5 Minutes
3.) Try to unlock using your password.
4.) Unlock failes and tells you to switch to console and kill the screensaver, if you have started X manually with startx you can see the following message:

*** glibc detected *** kcheckpass: malloc(): memory corruption: 0x096aec38

I'm thinking now this is something related to glibc ..., but I have no clue about linking issues, etc.
Comment 2 Andriy Baranskyy 2009-05-31 03:24:24 UTC
I have already reported this issue in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=239672 . The same thing is mentioned here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257339
However, it does not look as though this bug is getting any attention whatsoever.
Comment 3 Maciej Mrozowski gentoo-dev 2009-08-27 15:33:58 UTC
Are you able to reproduce with kdm-4.3.0 and updated system? (with latest stable gcc, etc).
Comment 4 Maciej Mrozowski gentoo-dev 2009-08-27 15:42:51 UTC
I cannot reproduce any of issues mentioned here (with kde-4.3.0), please verify whether it still applies to you.
Comment 5 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-08-27 19:03:42 UTC
Seems fixed to me.
Comment 6 Maciej Mrozowski gentoo-dev 2009-08-31 01:25:08 UTC
I'm closing this one.

@Andriy
Your case falls under bug 257339 and please continue there.
