Description Yar Odin 2008-10-24 18:08:24 UTC
This blocking is occur only on ~
Highest not masked version of dev-db/postgresql-base for installing is 8.3.4 on ~.
BUT default not masked version of dev-db/libpq for installing is 8.2.7
And we got:
emerge libpq
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild N ] dev-db/libpq-8.2.7 USE="kerberos nls pam readline ssl zlib -pg-intdatetime -threads"
[blocks B ] dev-db/libpq ("dev-db/libpq" is blocking dev-db/postgresql-base-8.3.4)
[blocks B ] dev-db/libpq ("dev-db/libpq" is blocking app-admin/eselect-postgresql-0.3)
[blocks B ] dev-db/postgresql-base ("dev-db/postgresql-base" is blocking dev-db/libpq-8.2.7)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge dev-db/postgresql-base on ~
2. emerge libpq on ~
3. and via verse

Since you're using ~arch, it's not unexpected that things will break some times.

Having said that, it appears this issue has come about since postgresql-base isn't masked along with libpq and postgres:

# Caleb Tennis <caleb@gentoo.org> (26 Mar 2008)
# Masking per dev-zero request for more testing time
=dev-db/libpq-8.3*
=dev-db/postgresql-8.3*

Also, this is quite an old mask entry (about 6 months). I've CCed dev-zero specifically (sorry if you're in the pgsql-bugs alias) to ask if this version still needs testing, or if it can be unmasked?
Comment 2 Holger Hoffstätte 2008-10-25 16:03:54 UTC
(luser alert) Maybe I misunderstand the problem here, but the packages have been split & renamed. You can have either (libpq && postgresql) OR (postgresql-base && postgresql-server) installed, no combinations. AFIK eselect is only intended for the latter, and intentionally unmasked so that all other ~dependencies could be fixed from libpq to postgresql-base.
Comment 3 Caleb Tennis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-04-09 22:38:18 UTC
Yes, it's intended that you use postgresql-server if you want to install 8.3
