When trying to emerge mozilla-firefox, it failed when compiling the dependency x11-libs/pango-1.22.0. Removing sse2 from USE in make.conf fixes this bug. My processor does support sse2 and everything else I built uses sse2. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge mozilla-firefox 2. wait for the dependencies to reach x11-libs/pango-1.22.0 3. ebuild should fail after configure, during make Actual Results: /usr/lib/libpixman-1.so: undefined reference to `pixman_have_sse2' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [cairosimple] Error 1 make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... /usr/lib/libpixman-1.so: undefined reference to `pixman_have_sse2' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [cairoshape] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.22.0/work/pango-1.22.0/examples' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.22.0/work/pango-1.22.0' make: *** [all] Error 2 * * ERROR: x11-libs/pango-1.22.0 failed. * Call stack: * ebuild.sh, line 49: Called src_compile * environment, line 2579: Called gnome2_src_compile * environment, line 1953: Called die * The specific snippet of code: * emake || die "compile failure" * The die message: * compile failure * * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant. * A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.22.0/temp/build.log'. * The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/pango-1.22.0/temp/environment'. * Expected Results: Working firefox install emerge --info: Portage 2.2_rc11 (default/linux/x86/2008.0/server, gcc-4.3.1, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.26-gentoo i686) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.26-gentoo-i686-Intel-R-_Pentium-R-_4_CPU_2.80GHz-with-glibc2.0 Timestamp of tree: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 21:45:01 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p17-r1 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r13, 2.5.2-r8 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.63 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.1-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 2.2.6a virtual/os-headers: 2.6.23-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/php/apache2-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cgi-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cli-php5/ext-active/ /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="distlocks parallel-fetch preserve-libs protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/gentoo/ ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/gentoo/ ftp://gentoo.cites.uiuc.edu/pub/gentoo/" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="acl apache2 bash-completion berkdb bzip2 cli cracklib crypt cups dri fortran gdbm gpm iconv ipv6 isdnlog ldap mailwrapper midi mudflap mysql ncurses nls nptl nptlonly opengl openmp pam pcre perl pppd python readline reflection session snmp spl sse sse2 ssl sysfs tcpd truetype unicode vim-syntax x86 xml xorg zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1 emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="access actions alias auth auth_basic auth_digest authn_anon authn_dbd authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock dbd deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers ident imagemap include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation proxy proxy_ajp proxy_balancer proxy_connect proxy_http rewrite setenvif so speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev glint i810 mach64 mga neomagic nv r128 radeon savage sis tdfx trident vesa vga via vmware voodoo" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LINGUAS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

an IRC friend of mine was unable to compile xorg-server 1.5.1 because of the same original bug (thus posting to this bug instead of opening another). His workaround was to explicitely add mmx and sse to his USE flags for pixman additionally to sse2 and recompile pixman Could you too try this workaround please? I'm pretty sure both bugs are strongly related.
I had sse and sse2 in my use flags, but not mmx (guess I just forgot...). That did the trick! Thanks!
I disagree with marking this bug as FIXED. It's RESOLVED, but imho should be fixed at the ebuild or upstream. Either it should abort compilation (bad), warn the user (better) or inherit mmx if needed (dunno). I hope the assigned team will evaluate this report.
Same problem here. Please actually resolve/fix it.
