Kernel: 2.6.25-gentoo-r6 #3 SMP Fri Jul 11 18:16:04 PDT 2008 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux What the heck is going on here? I'm trying to connect to the AP with address "00:0c:41:3f:c1:10". Whenever the other AP shows up in dmesg first the whole thing doesn't work. Sometimes when I restart the service, though, it works. It can take as many as 50 tries to get it working on a bad day but it usually (not always) eventually works. Sometimes it works from the start. I've had this problem no matter where I go--with different AP's. It's only a problem when the AP I'm trying to connect to is encrypted, and the other AP's are open. dmesg output: wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 wlan0: RX authentication from 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) wlan0: authenticated wlan0: associate with AP 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 (capab=0x421 status=0 aid=2) wlan0: associated wlan0: switched to short barker preamble (BSSID=00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3) wlan0: WMM queue=2 aci=0 acm=0 aifs=3 cWmin=15 cWmax=1023 burst=0 wlan0: WMM queue=3 aci=1 acm=0 aifs=7 cWmin=15 cWmax=1023 burst=0 wlan0: WMM queue=1 aci=2 acm=0 aifs=2 cWmin=7 cWmax=15 burst=30 wlan0: WMM queue=0 aci=3 acm=0 aifs=2 cWmin=3 cWmax=7 burst=15 wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 wlan0: RX authentication from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) wlan0: authenticated wlan0: associate with AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 wlan0: authentication frame received from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10, but not in authenticate state - ignored wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 wlan0: association frame received from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10, but not in associate state - ignored wlan0: association frame received from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10, but not in associate state - ignored wlan0: association frame received from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10, but not in associate state - ignored wlan0: association frame received from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10, but not in associate state - ignored wlan0: RX authentication from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) wlan0: authenticated wlan0: associate with AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 wlan0: authentication frame received from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10, but not in authenticate state - ignored wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 (capab=0x411 status=0 aid=3) wlan0: associated wlan0: No ProbeResp from current AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 - assume out of range wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 wlan0: RX authentication from 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) wlan0: authenticated wlan0: associate with AP 00:0c:41:3f:c1:10 wlan0: Initial auth_alg=0 wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 wlan0: RX authentication from 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 (alg=0 transaction=2 status=0) wlan0: authenticated wlan0: associate with AP 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3 (capab=0x421 status=0 aid=2) wlan0: associated wlan0: switched to short barker preamble (BSSID=00:1c:df:3b:1c:f3) wlan0: WMM queue=2 aci=0 acm=0 aifs=3 cWmin=15 cWmax=1023 burst=0 wlan0: WMM queue=3 aci=1 acm=0 aifs=7 cWmin=15 cWmax=1023 burst=0 wlan0: WMM queue=1 aci=2 acm=0 aifs=2 cWmin=7 cWmax=15 burst=30 wlan0: WMM queue=0 aci=3 acm=0 aifs=2 cWmin=3 cWmax=7 burst=15 iwlist wlan0 scanning output: Cell 01 - Address: 00:1E:E5:4E:AC:38 ESSID:"matthews" Mode:Master Channel:11 Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11) Quality=46/100 Signal level=-81 dBm Noise level=-127 dBm Encryption key:on IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : CCMP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s Extra:tsf=00000047962a7c96 Cell 02 - Address: 00:0C:41:3F:C1:10 ESSID:"linksys2" Mode:Master Channel:9 Frequency:2.452 GHz (Channel 9) Quality=90/100 Signal level=-41 dBm Noise level=-127 dBm Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s Extra:tsf=000000000100c755 The offending AP doesn't even show up in a scan! Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: Restart computer, or restart wireless. Sometimes I have tried unloading and reloading the iwl3945 module.
Thank you for report Alex. Can you reproduce this behavior with 2.6.28* kernel and in-kernel driver?
most likely this is not an issue anymore as recent kernels have much improved intel wireless support. please reopen if problem persists thanks
