Same results with x11-libs/wxGTK-2.8.8.1

wxGTK won't compile if "-fvisibility-inlines-hidden" is set in your CXXFLAGS. So please remove it and try again.

yes, this is the problem. Why don't we filter "-fvisibility-inlines-hidden" out in the ebuild?

(btw if it isn't clear why, Diego's comment is the best summary.  in general, -fvisibility-inlines-hidden may sound good but it does cause issues with code using RTTI and also changes ABI.  we don't filter it because our (Gentoo's) policy is to not filter flags unless absolutely necessary, usually when a common and supported flag (like say -fomit-frame-pointer or -g3) causes breakage for some unknown or unfixable reason.)
