the xpdf on the foolabs download site builds with two extra command line options (-t1lib and -freetype). use "xpdf -h" to view them. on my 2560x1600 monitor using these flags shows *much* better looking pdf output. I checked into this a little more. I looked at the use flags that xpdf and poppler are honoring, but did not see either t1lib or freetype in there. (In fact, I added these flags into make.conf, even though I do not think they are in use.) of course, maybe this is just my font inexperience---fonts seem to be a terrible mess in the worlds of computers---but I figured I would just let everyone know of the easy solution of using the statically linked binary. I dont know about T1lib, but poppler most certainly links to freetype now. I guess this issue is obsolete.
