In your case, you made the common mistake of either 1) not building your needed filesystem drivers directly into the kernel (not as modules), or 2) you didn't correctly setup /etc/fstab for your partition arrangement, or 3) you didn't correctly setup your kernel boot line in /boot/grub/grub.conf In any of these cases, the correct place to ask for support is in the Gentoo Forums, specifically the Installing Gentoo subforum (right at the top): http://forums.gentoo.org
