Description jannis 2008-07-23 07:11:14 UTC
I've been using portage-2.2_rc1 since it made it to ~amd64. The first thing I noticed is that the "ecompressdir"-step takes extremely long (2 minutes are normal).
Then sometimes portage hard-freezes my system, depending on the packages I try to install. For fftw-3.1.2-r1 it freezes during compile-stage, gtk+-2.12.11 freezed somewhere between install and merge, openoffice-2.4.1 worked just perfect. The freezes are reproducible, meaning they happen every time I try to install the same package, always at the same time. I can't even use the SysRq-Key, I have to poweroff the laptop using the power-button. Reverting to portage-2.1.X resolved the issue so I blame portage-2.2_rc1 for the behaviour.

The system is a IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60 with a Core2Duo T5500, 1.6GHz and 1.5GB RAM

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have portage 2.2_rc1
2. emerge gtk+ or fftw
3. wait until hard freeze

Actual Results:
system is frozen, sysrq doesn't even work

Expected Results:
no freeze and package emerged correctly

emerge --info (after reverting back to portage 2.1.5.6):

There are lots of fixes in 2.2_rc2. Could you test with that please?
Comment 2 jannis 2008-07-24 10:37:08 UTC
Hm yes, upgrading to 2.2_rc3 seems to help. At least I don't have any problems to merge the mentioned packages now. Thanks
