Description Markus Preis 2008-07-05 11:43:26 UTC
after emerge -uDNva world new gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r6 are installed. The obligatory emerge nvidia-drivers will install nvidia-drivers-100.14.19 and fails

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge gentoo-sources-2.6.25-r6
2. genkernel all
3. emerge nvidia-drivers

Actual Results:

Does nvidia-drivers-100.14.23 work? If not, this is an issue we cannot fix. Nvidia is interested selling graphics cards. Maintaining their "legacy" drivers does not seem to be a high priority.
Comment 3 Markus Preis 2008-07-05 15:34:45 UTC
No. emerge of nvidia-drivers-100.14.23 fails too.
I use a GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1)

Here the output of ebuild /usr/portage/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.23.ebuild install

This problem isn't exclusive to nvidia drivers. I just tried to compile ati-drivers, and it fails with the following message:

I'm also using an AMD64 processor, but with Gentoo 2008 beta2, kernel 2.6.24-r5, and GCC 4.1.2

Personally, I think there's something wrong with the AMD64 build system. I've read on now 3 different forums where people using Gentoo and AMD64 had to re-install glibc. The thing is, I just re-emerged it yesterday as a preventive measure. I kept reading that GCC 4.3 was the reason cdrdao wouldn't compile, but I 'm using 4.1.3 and it wouldn't compile for me either. I had to manually switch to 1.2.2r2 just to compile K3B.

I guess I'll just keep googling and keep re-emerging my build system until I find out what's causing the problem
Comment 6 Markus Preis 2008-07-09 08:57:03 UTC
I rebuild my system with emerge -e system and rebuild my kernel with genkernel all but nvidia-drivers fails again.
Comment 7 Chris Spencer 2008-07-13 03:47:03 UTC
I just did a clean install of 2008.0 final. This time I used the minimal cd install method to avoid the problems of the LiveCD.

ati-drivers still fail with the same message.
Comment 8 Chris Spencer 2008-07-13 03:48:24 UTC
Actually, the msg is different:

Comment 9 Markus Preis 2008-07-17 19:15:41 UTC
I tried today to find a solution for my problem. And i have found a patch in the nvidia forum.
Here is the Link:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=112452
I use the
NVIDIA-x86_64-100.14.19-kernel-2.6.25-compat.diff.txt patch
Now I can compile the ebuild after patching the working directory.
It seems to work now.
I will give it a try and test it a few days.

Perhaps somebody can include the patch in an ebuild update
Comment 10 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-12-17 00:29:38 UTC
This bug was originally about nvidia-drivers not working with 2.6.25. NVIDIA released the 169.x series which worked with this kernel version, that version has a stable version and there are even newer versions for 2.6.26.

So this bug is effectively fixed.
