Did you install recently? Did you emerge xinetd while you were still working in a chroot while you had booted the system from a Gentoo boot CD/DVD?
Nope, this is a 1 year old system. I emerged xinetd just to have a look at it and now wanted to unmerge it again without having it in use for a single minute. The change to the 2008-profile was a long time ago, as well.
Both bugs Jeroen Roovers pointed to mention >bash-3.2_p20 so I switched to 3.2_p17 with no success. On bug 222091 there is pam_mount mentioned as a possible correlation between two affected machines. I'm using pam_mount-0.41.
Please attach /var/db/pkg/sys-apps/xinetd-2.3.14/environment.bz2 to this bug too.

This might be a variant of bug 211833, but it also might be a bug in portage-2.1.4.4 environment handling. Could you test with >=portage-2.1.5.6 to see if the problem is reproducible? If you remove the /var/db/pkg/sys-apps/xinetd-2.3.14/environment.bz2 then does the uninstall then complete successfully? Is the problem still reproducible if you reinstall the package and uninstall it again with >=portage-2.1.5.6?
After removing /var/db/pkg/sys-apps/xinetd-2.3.14/environment.bz2 I can unmerge it successfully. The bug is _not_ reproducible with =portage-2.1.5.6 Thanks!
