Hello, aclocal.m4 is not compatible with the latest toolchain and makes eautoreconf to abort the ebuild.

Be so nice, and post the error message, not your thoughts. For, while I don't know exactly why, I know that eautoreconf is sometimes invoked due to FreeBSD issues of libtool, so simply commenting it may not be correct.
(In reply to comment #2) > Be so nice, and post the error message, not your thoughts. [troll] Please, that is not the answer I like the best to read... Reckon that my "thoughts" are certainly better to understand as just a simple "istanbul doesn't compile, my life depends on it, help!" [/troll] > For, while I don't know exactly why, I know that eautoreconf > is sometimes invoked due to FreeBSD issues of libtool, so simply > commenting it may not be correct. > As you guess, istanbul package uses an old aclocal.m4 and common directory with m4 files that are incompatible with the gentoo latest toolchain. Unfortunately, autoupdate is no help here. It is not able to correct istanbul aclocal m4 files on the fly. If autoupdate doesn't help, eautoreconf won't. The info that will help to diagnose the issue, app-shells/bash: 3.2_p33 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.6 dev-lang/python: 2.5.2-r5 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 dev-util/ccache: 2.4-r7 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r3 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.62-r1 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.1-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r2 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.25-r4 Moreover and as far as i know, it is easy for everyone to evaluate the issue with a simple, ebuild /usr/portage/media-video/istanbul/istanbul-0.2.2.ebuild unpack Here is the result, ***** aclocal ***** ***** aclocal -I common -I common /usr/share/aclocal/dotconf.m4:5: warning: underquoted definition of AM_PATH_DOTCONF /usr/share/aclocal/dotconf.m4:5: run info '(automake)Extending aclocal' /usr/share/aclocal/dotconf.m4:5: or see http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#Extending-aclocal common/gst-feature.m4:50: error: m4_defn: undefined macro: _m4_divert_diversion common/gst-feature.m4:50: the top level autom4te-2.62: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1 aclocal-1.10: autom4te failed with exit status: 1 If you google a bit, you will read that aclocal.m4 file in particular is too old and needs to be upgraded. PS: maintainers, please be a bit more user friendly.
Don't mind me, I'm simply not anything friendly, but there's always a chance it wouldn't be reproducible. I'll have a look at the svn.
Right now, my personal guess is that in common/gst-feature.m4, in GST_CHECK_FEATURE macro, the the line '[dnl' (8th of the macro) should be moved to the second line (be above 'echo' line), so the AC_MSG_NOTICE macros are inside the bracket.
