So why don't you remove the extra space from your CFLAGS? CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe " to CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe" ?
Thanks, that did it. But it raises the question as to why this is the only package that's been affected by that? I haven't edited the make.conf file in a very long time (> 6 months, probably longer than that for the CFLAGS line in the file) and I keep my server up to date so packages have been emerged on a regular basis.....

It's hardly the only package that trips over superfluous whitespace. IIRC, apache had problems with CFLAGS=" [OPTIONS] " a good while ago, and probably still does.
