Description Michael Cramer 2008-04-27 13:12:09 UTC
while i'm installing a new gentoo with the server profile, mailwrapper is set by default, but this use-flag makes postfix unusable there is no sendmail, mailq and other commands are available, only a binary with the name sendmail.postfix. so no package finds the sendmail command. please fix the entire mailwrapper thing for postfix or remove this useflag from default profiles.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Torsten Veller (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-27 15:23:18 UTC
So you have mailwrapper installed but no /usr/sbin/sendmail?
What is in /etc/mail/mailwrapper?
Comment 2 Michael Cramer 2008-04-27 21:22:18 UTC
i have no /etc/mail/mailwrapper file
Comment 3 Torsten Veller (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-28 05:44:34 UTC
It's hard to help if you don't even give version numbers and emerge --info.
Comment 4 Michael Cramer 2008-04-28 14:08:22 UTC
emerge -pv postfix mailwrapper

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Eh, i meant /etc/mail/mailer.conf.

This is the mailer.conf file from mail-mta/postfix/files/ :
<http://sources.gentoo.org/viewcvs.py/gentoo-x86/mail-mta/postfix/files/mailer.conf?view=markup>

Postfix should work with this mailer.conf and the /usr/sbin/sendmail binary from net-mail/mailwrapper.

                 ^^ sendmail?

So if you are missing /usr/sbin/sendmail with USE=mailwrapper then reinstall net-mail/mailwrapper.
I can only guess sendmail was removed while changing the mailwrapper useflag.

yes i mean sendmail in this comment

but there wasn't a change in USE-Flags when i emerged postfix the first time, because it was a fresh install of it

this could also be verified by unmerging postfix and mailwrapper, and then simply run an emerge postfix and sendmail disappers, also emerging postfix twice after mailwrapper was installed didn't help. only turning mailwrapper off after some days i noticed that i missed some mails.

re-emerging mailwrapper after postfix fix the sendmail binary existens, but rmail command isn't still available
Comment 10 Yuval Kogman 2008-07-15 16:17:18 UTC
Apparently both postfix and ssmtp still install mailq and newaliases even though mailwrapper is installed and in USE:

qfile $( which mailq )
mail-mta/postfix (/usr/bin/mailq)

so it is not possible to install ssmtp alongside it.

This is not similiar it seems, just install postfix with +mailwrapper set and you can install mailwrapper then.

After a sync today, mailwrapper is blocking postfix, and I do have the mailwrapper use flag set. No other MTAs are installed.

I was having the exact same problem.

Updated postfix and remerged mail wrapper and everything is working fine except that /etc/mail/mailwrapper has been replaced with mailer.conf and eselect can not locate any profiles in that file..

So what's the status on this bug now? Can it be marked confirmed yet?

> So what's the status on this bug now? Can it be marked confirmed yet?

Well i can definitely confirm an issue, the resolution is what I'm having trouble with. Here is my guess as to what is going on. Postfix creates a file called /etc/mail/mailer.conf eselect is looking for a file called /etc/mail/mailwrapper. So either eselect is wrong or postfix is wrong, either way the two are not connecting to create the /etc/sbin/sendmail link/file. I checked with ssmtp on my other system and i done show either files in /etc/mail but something did create my symlink. IIRC ssmtp blocks other mta's and they are not slotted for co existence so its anyones (gentoo mta maintainers?) guess as to what needs to be fixed.

Just my 2 cents.
Comment 17 Tobias Scherbaum (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-05-19 18:31:58 UTC
Broken mailwrapper support has been removed as of =mail-mta/postfix-2.6.0, therefore closing this bug.
